If you are looking to heal your skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, joints and other parts of your body then you may have heard about organic comfrey for healing.
This healing, medicinal plant grows naturally in northern Europe and parts of Asia. In fact, Comfrey has been recognized and cultivated as a medicinal plant since 400 BC. “Confere” in Latin means “to bring together”, this is because the ancient Greeks and Romans used the Comfrey plant to heal fractured and broken bones and other serious wounds and injuries.
Rejuvenate Your Body
Comfrey is especially excellent for quickly healing badly injured skin, muscles, joints and ligaments. Organic comfrey for healing is used for various sprains, torn ligaments, deep cuts and grazes, bone fractures, jammed injuries and big bruises. What makes comfrey even more special is that it will not only heal the body rapidly (70% quicker on average) but it will also stop and prevent scar tissue from forming.
This makes it a must have medicinal herb in your kitchen cabinet.
Comfrey gets it’s quick healing actions from a naturally-occurring chemical alkaloid called allantoin. This special healing substance found in the root and leaf of this super plant. What’s interesting to know is that allantoin occurs naturally in our bodies. Allantoin is able to stimulate and regenerate cell growth in various connective tissues likes bones, muscles, ligaments and even cartilage. This is why its important to use organic comfrey for healing.
To make things even more interesting, allantoin is able to quickly seep through the damaged tissues, enabling it to quickly heal as well penetrate much deeper. As a result, serious injuries can heal and recover a lot more quickly and scar tissue risk is minimal. And this is not just hearsay or anecdotal evidence.
Comfrey’s amazing healing effects against bruising and swelling of damaged tissues were shown in both pharmacological studies as well as clinical trials.
Another amazing property of Comfrey is that it can regulate the growth of skin cells on our body. People with eczema and psoriasis, and other chronic skin diseases, will find comfrey very useful. Comfrey appears to slow down the rate of skin cell growth, stabilizing and normalizing it in due process.
In Chinese traditional medicine, the comfrey plant has been used for well over 2000 years. Medicinal comfrey baths were used during the Middle Ages by sick people to help them quickly get better. To put it bluntly, comfrey is accepted as “one of the greatest medicinal herbs known to man”.

Taking Internally?
While applying comfrey topically as a compress or poultice has always been considered as safe, sadly there have been some ambiguous reports in recent years about the so called “dangers of eating comfrey”.
There was a “crack down” on companies which sold products that contain comfrey in its formulations such as creams and salves. They were really coming down hard on comfrey-containing products that were quiet harmless and in fact, beneficial. Organic comfrey for healing or something else?
So what’s really going on here? Is comfrey plant really that dangerous, as the FDA states?
Off course comfrey naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). And yes, these chemical substances called PAs have been found to damage the liver when administered to newborn baby rats. However, were these studies carried out as they would be in the real world when used properly by people? More importantly, was comfrey used as a whole plant and drunk as tea or eaten whole?
FDA Fraud?
You see, this is where the FDA does not tell us the full story behind the real pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) trials.
The study that FDA used to spread fear surrounding comfrey’s internal use, actually isolated the pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and directly injected them numerous times interperitoneally (directly into the liver) to 2-week-old baby rats over a period of 7 weeks. As a result of injecting pure, isolated PAs, liver damage in baby rats was observed. So, it was concluded that comfrey, and all other plants that have pyrrolizidine alkaloids present, all cause liver damage and not only in 2-week-old baby rats but in grown adult humans too.
What these animal experiments failed to realize is what herbalists knew for centuries. Fact is, ANY substance when used in excess can be quiet harmful, especially when it’s purified and isolated (drinking coffee as opposed to overdosing on pure caffeine tablets anyone?). The amount of pyrrolizidine alkaloids injected into the 2-week-old rats during the 7 weeks trials was like injecting an extract of over 5,600 comfrey leaves, when injected into a “man-sized rat.”
Another fact ignored is that you can’t isolate and purify one alkaloid from the plant and expect it will have the same action as the whole plant when administered. That is like taking wine, injecting it into small rats in large doses over 7 weeks, and then claiming that grapes cause liver damage.
Medicinal plants are not like pharmaceutical drugs or purified alkaloids. Herbs and medicinal plants contain a large number of various natural alkaloids that work together to heal the body when used topically or internally.
Labs Are Not Real World
This is how it was designed in the real world, not in a lab. Each alkaloid is bound with all the others and they all work together in harmony to create the plant’s medicinal and healing effect. When you isolate and concentrate pure pyrrolizidine alkaloids, they will NEVER work the same as a whole comfrey plant.
Organic comfrey for healing should be done with a whole plant, not isolated alkaloids.
Most natural foods such as almonds, apples, tea, mustard and radishes all contain natural chemicals that, when isolated, are shown to be toxic (cyanide). Will the FDA also tell us to stop eating these healthy, natural foods because they can be processed into cyanide?
If you know how far the FDA goes to protect the pharmaceutical interests and that of their share holders then this will suddenly make sense why comfrey is restricted. They all told us that eating apricot seeds can cause cyanide poisoning, yet millions of people around the world eat apricot, apple and plum seeds every year without any side effects.
These fraudulent studies also failed to distinguish between the different species of comfrey plants. There are two comfrey plants available: the Russian comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum) which has up to 5 times more of pyrrolizidine alkaloids as the regular comfrey (Symphytum officinale).
But as you would have it known, in one such “clinical comfrey study”, both of the S. x uplandicum and S. officinale were used during the animal experiment. Also what was failed to be mentioned is that the root of comfrey has a larger concentration of PAs, in fact, up to 20 times times more than in mature leaves of the plant.
The Verdict
OK, after all the above information, when can you do about it as an informed individual who witnessed both sides of the story?
Is comfrey plant safe or toxic? this is something my friend, you must decide for yourself and your family.
It’s very easy to make sure that you use comfrey safely, responsibly and without any risks. Work out what plant you have, the Russian comfrey or the regular, common comfrey. Will you be using the root or the dried or fresh leaves? Don’t use comfrey (or other medicinal plants) if you don’t need to. Why take medicine if you are healthy?
Comfrey is safe and magnificent for healing serious injuries, wounds, broken bones and torn tendons. Be aware that topical use is different to when you are drinking comfrey tea. When you apply comfrey as a compress, the PA absorption is almost non existent as opposed to eating or drinking comfrey as food. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are not very water soluble, making comfrey tea will have much lower levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids as opposed to an extract or a tincture.
My Personal Experience With This Plant
I have personally drank comfrey root tea for several weeks without any side effects, it actually helped to quickly heal my torn AC joint in my right shoulder. Doctors told me I would need to take 4-5 months to recover, so I applied comfrey root powder compress three times a day with DMSO for 6 weeks straight and drank comfrey root tea 2-3 times a day for 6-7 weeks. I did not need any surgery and I was doing push ups and pull ups after 7 weeks. Nothing short of a miracle considering every sports physician told me I would need 4-5 months off any physical activity until my shoulder healed.
While we are on this topic, please remember who makes money from condemning comfrey as a healing plant. When people use natural methods and plants to heal themselves, ignoring pharmaceutical drugs, large pharmaceutical companies stand to lose money short and long term. More so, have you noticed how many pharmaceutical drugs are available and used by millions of people across the world every day, which 100% cause liver damage even when used as the doctor prescribed?
For example, the most common drug used, paracetamol is taken by the young and the elderly everyday for minor headaches and other aches and pains, yet it has been proven time and time again that paracetamol causes severe liver damage. Medicinal plants have a proven track record of safe use for thousands of years through traditional use. Pharmaceutical drugs are very new and often come untested and with biased safety testing to benefit the companies that produce them, all done for profit in mind, not the health of the people.
Use Common Sense
Socrates, the Godfather of medicine said the following quote:
“The cure of many diseases remains unknown to the physicians of Hellos (Greece) because they do not study the whole person.” – Socrates, (470-399 BC).
You can apply the same concept to comfrey, the medical trials focused on ONE alkaloid present. And what did they do? They isolated the pyrrolizidine alkaloid, concentrated it and then INJECTED into 2-week-old rats for 7 weeks straight. Like I wrote before, try injecting wine into a healthy human liver for 7 weeks and then see how they fare.
Organic comfrey for healing can be achieved with comfrey root powder, leaves and drinking it as tea.
Medicinal plants must always be used with respect and care. If it can heal you, it can also harm you when used inappropriately or to excess. Apply common sense and always do your thorough research. Don’t just listen to the mainstream media, the mainstream medicine, get the 360 degree view. As with any other medicines, always consult with your doctor before taking any medicine, natural or not, especially if you are already taking some other preparations as they can interact.
The above information and personal opinions have not been reviewed or endorsed by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). These products mentioned are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or health condition.
